What is Coursera?

Coursera is, with over 200 million registered learners worldwide, the largest provider of MOOCs. The learning platform was founded in 2012 by two computer science professors from Stanford University. Coursera partners with more than 375 renowned universities and companies to offer online courses for individuals and organizations worldwide. The course publishers are typically well-known universities like Yale or Stanford. Major technology companies such as Google, Meta, or IBM also provide courses. Important to know: In May 2026, Coursera acquired the platform Udemy. Both continue to operate as separate platforms with their own logins, but together they have over 300 million learners. In this article, you'll find out whether Coursera is really worth it and how the courses work.

What courses and topics are available on Coursera?

The e-learning platform offers a very wide selection of topics. You can experience this variety by clicking the "Search" button and browsing the course catalog.

Topics include: Health, Humanities, Computer Science, Business, Mathematics, and more. Just take a look at the screenshot below 😊

• When you click on a category, you'll see various sub-topics and degrees. The different degrees and courses on the platform are explained in more detail below.

How does Coursera work?

1. Search for a course 🔎

Filters and courses in German:

• To search for a course, you can use the categories mentioned above or the "search field".
• You can then filter the results. You can filter by language, duration, level, skills, learning product, and collaboration.

Filter: Of the filters just mentioned, I often use "Language" and "Collaboration".

• The Language filter however almost always refers to the subtitles and not to the spoken language. The courses offered on Coursera are in English, but are usually offered with subtitles in numerous other languages, including German. For part of the catalog, there is now also AI dubbing, among other things in German. The spoken language is therefore no longer necessarily English.
• With the Collaboration filter you can select which university or company created the course. So if you want a certificate from Yale or IBM, you should use this filter.
• An additional filter I use is the Coursera Plus filter.

2. Take a course 🙋🏻

Found a course? Great! Now you are on the course page and see some information about the course and what you will learn.

The right section of a course page is particularly interesting. There you will learn, among other things, what the career opportunities after completing the course look like and in which languages the course is offered.

Coursera guided projects

Guided projects on Coursera allow you to take part in an online course in split screen. An explainer video plays on one side of the screen and on the other side an application is opened via the Coursera cloud. Here is a screenshot of a course that explains CRM using the HubSpot software.

The example mentioned above is free and in this case seems a bit promotional for the HubSpot software. However, there are also less promotional guided courses on the platform, such as e.g. courses that explain SQL or the ChatGPT Playground.

Guided projects on a specific topic can be found via the "guided projects" filter and the search box.

How can I take a course for free?

If you want to take a free course on Coursera, you must:

• Click the "Enroll for Free" button. Don't be distracted by the date below; it is actually always the current day.

• If you haven't signed up with Coursera yet, you will be prompted to do so now.

• Since August 2025, Coursera has replaced the previous audit mode with a "Preview" function: For almost every course, you can now only view and work on the first module for free, including the graded assignments within it. The remaining modules remain locked until you purchase the course or take out a subscription. For a smaller number of courses, there is still the option "full course, no certificate", where you can complete the entire course for free, but without a certificate.

• Certificates are not free for either option. However, for some, but not all, courses, they can be purchased afterwards; for that you must complete all assignments and quizzes.

Caution: If you are offered a 7-day free trial here, it is not a free course; after the 7 days you have to pay for a subscription.

If you can't afford the certificate for a single course or specialization, you can still apply for financial aid on Coursera. To do so, fill out a form on the respective course page and explain why you need the support. The review usually takes up to 16 days. For a specialization, you need to apply for support for each individual course separately. This form of support is not available for Coursera Plus, MasterTrack certificates, or degrees, but for degrees, Coursera offers its own financing and installment payment options.

3. How a course on Coursera works 💻

The online courses consist of videos, texts, and quizzes. Often, you also need to upload assignments that other participants then evaluate, so-called "peer reviews".

For example, in the course Fundamentals of Graphic Design, you need to watch videos, answer quizzes about the content, and submit your own work and drawings to pass the course.

As I understand it, you can retake a quiz as many times as you want until you pass it. However, sometimes after a few attempts, you have to wait a certain time before you can try again. The answers to some quizzes can even already be found on the internet.

Discussion forums:

In discussion forums, you can ask questions or check if a similar question has maybe already been answered. I really like the Coursera discussion forums overall, because people often reply and participants are active.

In some courses, you also have access to Coursera Coach, an AI-powered assistant that Coursera is gradually introducing since September 2024. Coach summarizes lessons, answers questions about the course content, and creates additional practice questions. Coach does not replace a certificate; it is intended as a learning aid within the respective course and is currently not available in every course.

Once you have completed all the content and passed the assignments, you will receive a certificate.

Coursera offers different types of courses and pricing models. The pricing models on Coursera are varied and can be a bit confusing. So here is a simple overview of the course variants and costs.

Coursera Plus

• The cost: approx. 51 € per month or 348 € per year. The 7-day trial period is only available with the monthly plan. With the yearly plan, you have 14 days to request a refund instead.
• The subscription ends when you cancel after one month or year, depending on which subscription you took out.
• In the Plus subscription courses are included that can last from 1 to 2 hours up to several months.

Tip from me: Currently (as of 30.08.2026) there is a discount promotion. You only pay around 30.60 € instead of 51 € for the first three months. You can see if the offer is still active directly on the Coursera page.

With Coursera Plus you have access to over 10,000 courses, guided projects, specializations and unlimited certificates! Coursera Plus is therefore a subscription that gives you access to over 90 % of the learning programs in the Coursera catalog. The only things not included are MasterTrack certificates and bachelor's degrees. Once you have subscribed to Coursera Plus, you can take as many courses as you want without paying an additional fee, as long as the course is included in the Plus subscription.

Coursera Specializations

• 7-day trial period and then approx. 42-69 € per month - Or you can get the Coursera Plus subscription directly
• The subscription ends when you have completed all courses or cancel
• Duration: 1-3 months

The specializations consist of 4-6 or more individual online courses. By taking out the subscription for approx. 41 € per month, you only get access to the courses of your chosen specialization. If you choose an additional specialization, you have to pay for it again.

The courses in a specialization all fit a specific topic. After completing the course series, you receive a certificate confirming that you have successfully completed all courses. By the way, specializations are also included in the Plus subscription.

Professional Certificates

• 7-day trial period and then from 49 $ per month - Or Coursera Plus subscription
• Duration: 1-6 months

Professional Certificates are a series of courses, similar to specializations, that focus on teaching skills for the job. Examples of programs available as "Professional Certificate" would be: Google-Data Analytics, Salesforce Sales Operations, IBM Data Analyst. Some of the Professional Certificate courses are also included in the Coursera Plus subscription. By the way, Coursera does not show a euro price here, only the dollar amount.

MasterTrack® Certificates

• 2000 - 5000 dollars
• Takes 4-6 months

MasterTracks are a series of courses that are only available as a single unit. The courses last 4-6 months and cost between 2000 and 5000 dollars. After completing a MasterTrack, you receive a certificate that you can share on your resume or also on LinkedIn. You can also apply for the master's degree program at the respective university. If you are then admitted, your certificate is sometimes transferred and corresponds to a certain number of classes or credits in the degree program.

Bachelor's and Master's Degrees

• From 9000 dollars upward
• Duration: 1-6 years

Coursera also offers bachelor's and master's degree programs. The duration varies greatly. Bachelor's programs can last up to 6 years, master's degrees often only 1 to 3 years. However, these are not very cheap. If you would like to participate in one of these, you should inform yourself extensively and apply in good time.

My experiences | How good is Coursera really?

I have been testing Coursera for about two months now and I have taken the courses „Fundamentals of Graphic Design“ sowie „Google Data Analysis“. What I liked were the short explanation videos and the ability to view and rate the results of other participants.

• The course Fundamentals of Graphic Design, created by CalArts consists of many assignments and short videos. The assignments always have a deadline, but it is usually not binding and you can reset it at any time. The deadlines are only meant to give you a reference point of where you stand in the schedule. If you submit on time, there are also more course participants online who can evaluate your assignment faster. Generally, the course duration is viewed very optimistically and I was often faster than planned by Coursera.

• The course "Google-Datenanalyse" was created by Google and consists of videos, readings and quizzes. You can also jump freely between the individual weeks and tasks, and you can fast‑forward boring content or increase the playback speed to be finished even faster.

As a subscription model, I chose Coursera Plus since the majority of all courses on Coursera are included. The cost for the certificates is also included.

Criticism:

Another point of criticism is that the subscription models of the e‑learning platform are, in my opinion, very confusing. Often you are lured with "sign up for free" and then redirected to a paid subscription model. Also, the prices of the individual certificates you only see after clicking the "Sign Up" button.

Are the online courses free?

On the e‑learning platform Coursera, many free online courses are offered. The free online courses, however, usually do not include a certificate. You'll have to pay extra for the certificate. In this section, you'll learn how to find free online courses on the learning platform.

How to find free courses on Coursera:

Unfortunately, the free courses often get mixed in with the paid courses. Here are two steps you can take to find a free course:

1. Enter Free in the search field on Coursera, or go to the "Search button" and then "free". Unfortunately, you can only filter the results by topic via "Skills".

2. If you are looking for a free course on a specific topic, you can:

• Enter your term in the search field
• Then use the filter "Learning Products", select "Courses".
• This will largely filter out the Specializations and paid courses. Nevertheless, paid courses may still be among them. Unfortunately, you only notice that when you hit the paywall after the "sign up for free button".

Coursera Certificates

How recognized are Coursera certificates?

• Most certificates on Coursera are only confirmations that you have successfully completed the course. You can share them on LinkedIn and add them to your resume, but they are not officially recognized.

• The certificate also shows the university or company that created the course. Universities like Stanford or companies like IBM can attract attention on your resume.

So what is the benefit of a Coursera certificate? If you take a course that is professionally relevant to your chosen job, a certificate can make a difference. The content you learned and understood, combined with professional relevance, is crucial. However, these certificates do not guarantee a job and are more of a useful add-on.

Coursera Alternatives

Of course, there are also other e-learning platforms, and Coursera does not have to be the best provider for you.
