Distance Learning: University Certificates That Fit Alongside Your Job
This page lists courses from distance learning universities and traditional universities. None of them are a Bachelor's or Master's degree. You book a single module, study for three to sixteen months, and receive a university certificate at the end. I have deliberately removed these offers from the topic pages. A two-day seminar and a nine-month distance course do not belong in the same list. Otherwise, the price comparison becomes a farce.What distinguishes a university certificate from a seminar
A seminar often lasts two days and ends with a certificate of attendance. A university certificate lasts months and ends with an exam. You work with study booklets, online lectures, and assignments. The university supports you just like in a regular degree program. The most important difference, in my opinion, are the ECTS credits. SRH Fernhochschule awards six of them, AKAD University five. Euro-FH and IU Akademie also credit their modules towards later degree programs. A certificate of attendance cannot do that. If you ever pursue a full degree, you'll save real time.Who the effort is worth it for
Honestly, this is not a path for everyone. You need stamina over months and fixed study times each week. In return, you get a certificate that HR departments can immediately categorize. The word "university" has a different impact in a job application than the name of a seminar provider. I recommend this path especially in two cases. First, if you need a formal qualification in your profession. Second, if a degree is realistically on the horizon later. If you only need a tool for next week, take a short seminar.What the courses cost
The pricing models vary greatly, and that's exactly where it gets confusing. Euro-FH bills monthly, currently between 228 and 302 euros. With a duration of four to nine months, you end up with around 900 to 2,700 euros. AKAD University, at 98 euros per month, is significantly lower. SRH Fernhochschule states a total price of 840 euros. At IU Akademie, no price is listed on the page. Booking is done through a consultation because many courses are booked with a Bildungsgutschein (education voucher). For you, that could mean you pay nothing at all. Pay attention to the monthly figure. A course for 253 euros sounds cheaper than one for 840 euros. But over eight months, you pay well over double for the first one.Funding: who pays the bill
The courses at IU Akademie are funded through the Bildungsgutschein (education voucher) from the Federal Employment Agency. A consultation and a suitable justification are required. Several courses at Euro-FH are also eligible for funding, usually through state education bonuses. In my experience, too few people even ask. A call to the Federal Employment Agency takes twenty minutes. In the best case, it saves you several thousand euros.Four weeks free trial
Euro-FH and AKAD University let you start with a four-week trial without obligation. You get the materials, work through the first lessons, and can then drop out. I consider this the most honest trial available in this price range. Really use the time for learning.
