AI for Doctors: Which Course Fits Your Daily Routine?
AI in medicine is no longer a conference topic. It pre-formulates doctors' letters, sorts images, and answers patient questions. I have calmly looked at the ten continuing education courses in this category. The range goes from a free online course to a manufacturer's course for 3,950 euros net. Honestly, I find the selection harder than the topic itself. That's why I answer the questions that really matter before booking. My sorting does not follow a ranking, but your needs. You can compare afterwards below in the list.Where to start when you're at zero
Start with the free course. "Dr. med. AI: Basics" from KI-Campus was developed at Charité. About 24 hours take you from the basics to generative AI in diagnostics. At the end there is a certificate of achievement, you don't have to pay anything. The State Medical Chamber of Baden-Württemberg offers the same course with continuing education credits. In my opinion, this is the best introduction in the entire offering. You quickly notice whether AI for Doctors grabs you professionally. But you don't get a certificate for your quality management there. That's exactly why you book a paid training afterwards. Whoever starts the other way around often buys past their own needs.What the continuing education courses cost
The prices range from zero to 3,950 euros net. Short practice trainings start at 89 euros for three hours. Two hours on AI competence obligation cost 125 euros net per person. The university certificate from SRH Fernhochschule is at 840 euros. At the top are the manufacturer format from Johner Institute and the IHK continuing education. These prices only make sense if your employer covers them. Between 89 and 840 euros is, in my opinion, the reasonable range. For a single practice, the cheaper formats are completely sufficient. Pay attention to whether the VAT is already included in each price.How much time you need to plan
The time question tips more bookings than the price. The shortest trainings last two hours on an evening. The practice workshop at Johner Institute fills an entire day. The continuing education course to become AI Officer in a care company comprises 40 teaching hours over five days. The university certificate estimates around 150 hours over three months. Almost everyone can fit in two hours, but not 150 hours. I advise you to calculate honestly rather than optimistically. An evening appointment can be kept, a distance learning course alongside the consultation hours rarely. Plan for the follow-up time, not just the appointment itself.AI competence is mandatory, not optional
Article 4 of the EU AI Act requires trained personnel. Operators of AI systems must ensure sufficient AI competence in the team. This applies to medical practices, MVZs, and practice networks as soon as they use AI. Three offers here are exactly tailored for that. They explain risk classes, human oversight, and the interfaces to MDR and GDPR. At the end there is a certificate for your QM manual. I find the requirement bureaucratically formulated, but correct in content. Hallucinating models in diagnostics are not a marginal topic. A documented proof is part of the implementation.AI in the medical practice is not a management-only matter
The practice trainings are explicitly aimed at the entire team. Practice owners, employed doctors, medical assistants, and practice management sit together in the live stream. If only the practice management knows, that helps little in daily life. There is a training specifically for dental practices, including dental radiological image analysis. Not every course here targets the medical practice. For care facilities, two offers are available. The shorter one lasts five hours and shows voice assistance, route planning, and documentation. Those who develop medical devices will find two very special formats at Johner Institute. For clinics, the IHK continuing education in medical informatics with ten live modules fits. It surprises me how far apart the target groups are here. A workshop for approval departments helps you zero in the consultation hours. Check before booking whether your workplace is really meant.Do you need a certificate?
That depends on who you need to prove something to. For yourself, you don't need a paper. For an external audit, the certificate according to Article 4 of the AI Act counts. In an application, a university certificate with six ECTS points carries much more weight. One provider applies for CME points for its training from the Bavarian State Medical Chamber. An IHK certificate opens doors at the interface of medicine and IT. The proofs thus have very different weights here. I would never book an expensive certificate without a specific reason.Who it's worth it for and who it's not
It's worth it for everyone who already uses AI. Those who dictate or have findings pre-sorted bear responsibility for the result. Digitalization officers and QM managers also get a lot out of it here. I see the greatest benefit for teams with ongoing AI projects. For pure curiosity, the expensive courses are not suitable. That's what the free entry is for. However, a course does not replace a clear rule in the team. And if AI is not yet running in your practice, none of this is urgent.Who pays the bill
Ask your employer first. Almost all prices are per person, that quickly becomes expensive in a team. One provider mentions the education voucher and training bonus as funding options. The IHK continuing education is AZAV-certified and designated as educational leave. Members of the Munich Doctors Practice Network pay nothing for one of the trainings. The bpa discount reduces the care course from 669 to 599 euros. Such association discounts are rarely prominently displayed on the course page. That's why I always ask before booking. Ten minutes of effort can save you in the best case three figures.How I choose
I go by the occasion, not by the scope. Three questions are enough for me:- Do I have to provide proof, and to whom do I present it?
- How many hours do I have free in the next four weeks?
- Do I pay myself or does the practice pay?
