Existing data is an untapped resource in many companies for process optimization, automation, quality assurance, and decision-making. This seminar teaches you the ability to effectively process, interpret, and use data, often referred to as Data Literacy. Through many examples and exercises, you learn to generate valuable knowledge from rudimentary data, whether it is data from production, automation, test series, machine energy consumption, or sales.
Content-wise, you start with the path from data to wisdom: the data lifecycle, the right questions to ask the data, and the distinction between categorical and numerical as well as structured and unstructured data. You learn about databases, interfaces (APIs), and data repositories, and get an introduction to web scraping. Then it's about data preprocessing: exploration, cleaning, transformation, and enrichment of data, including dealing with bias in datasets.
In the further course, data analysis and model building are the focus: descriptive statistics, inferential statistics, testing hypotheses for significance, as well as statistical prediction models and basic concepts from Machine Learning and Deep Learning. Finally, you learn Data Storytelling, i.e., how to prepare analysis results for the target audience, choose the appropriate visualization, and derive recommendations for action from them.
The seminar is aimed at professionals from design, development and construction, from quality assurance and quality control, at production, operations and sales engineers, at specialists for machine monitoring, automation and maintenance, at project managers for data-driven planning, and at anyone who helps shape digitalization projects. You do not need special IT knowledge for this.
The seminar takes place over two days in person, on the first day from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., on the second day from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. It is led by Prof. Dr. Johann Schaible from the Technical University of Cologne, Campus Gummersbach. You will receive a certificate of participation, and the seminar can also be booked as an elective module within the certificate course "Qualitätsingenieur VDI".
